A Bitty Blankie for a Bitty Baby

I don't know what was in the air about 6 or 7 months ago, but baby season seems to be upon me.  Not upon ME personally, but upon many friends and family members of mine and thus-ly upon me.

Did'ya get that?

Part of the problem with making gifts for others and having a blog wherein you talk about all your creative pursuits is that those people you make stuff for actually READ your blog therefore you must keep MUM about quite a bit as it turns out.

It can make for a sparse blog at times.

A few people though who are *just so close* to having a baby that they are probably not reading at the moment and *hopefully for them* are already at the hospital having said baby will be receiving a little something from me.

Something made from this:

The top has been pieced already, with just enough non-perfection that there be no mistaking it was handmade (ahem) and it's just waiting to be quilted and bound.

As it turns out, it's quite bitty, so I'm not sure that it's terribly practical for much . . . maybe for use on the wall if they have no "theme" in their baby room or to cover their most special baby doll someday when they have such a doll.  Or perhaps it could just be that little lovey kind of blanket that doesn't keep a child particularly warm, but it does keep them feeling secure.

Whatever its eventual "use" it was made with love.  So for a little soon-to-be-born little guy or gal, Auntie Skooks says, "I love you, precious one.  Welcome."

I LOVE IT. I have a total thing for anything with birds or trees on it. I don't know where it came from, but it has blossomed over the last few years into a full blown obsession. God help me when I find something with birds AND trees. ;)

I hesitate to comment or make suggestions on the craft projects that you highlight here based on my non-knowledge of any such crafts or the techniques that are required in being crafty... however, this little bitty quilt reminded me of a handmade gift I received when Ryann was born. I think the giver/maker called it a Taggy blankie. It was tiny - maybe 5"x5" square and had a bunch of little loops of different color and textured ribbon sewed into the seams on all 4 sides. It was the perfect little something to put in the infant seat with the baby - not quite a toy, not quite a snugglie, but yet perfect to fidget with and manipulate. All that to say - is there any possibility that you could include some ribbon scraps in the seams and make this a customized taggie bitty quilt?

Yes! That is a great idea and I'm surprised at myself I didn't think of that first. I'm not done with putting it together so the ribbons can totally be put in first. Thanks for the suggestion! :)

What a cute quilt. Loved your comment about it looking "handmade". LOL I use to make baby quilts, and spent so much time into making them look "super" beautiful that once they were received, the parents would love it and then state, this one is going back into the box and closet so it doesn't get ruined. Sadly it took about 4 of those responses before I finally started making "handmade" quilts.

Besides, I have learned as a quilt maker that I am the only one who ever seems to see the mistakes.

Guess we will be seeing a lot of baby quilts here in the near future then?
