Mod Mosaic Quilt Block
Are you a scrap hoarder? You know what I mean . . . you've got a lovely piece left of your favorite fabric that is smaller than your palm and you think: "But I will probably be able to use this again." Somehow.
Well . . .me too. This kind of thinking can easily get you into trouble if you have no concept of just what in the world you can use those scraps for. And with no plan, you end up with total fabric chaos that may result in you ending up on Hoarders.
Let's face it . . . no one wants that.
Good thing there are (free) patterns like the Mod Mosaic Floor Pillow by Oh Fransson which, incidentally, was the inspiration for this month's Bee Vintage block.
Ok yes, I realize this is not a square. The finished blocks will end up being 16" square, but we were instructed to work with what we got and that a number of different sized chunks would be acceptable. My "block" is just over 8"x16". [Interestingly, the technique used to make last month's block does create a lot of waste so many of those offcuts were able to be used up in this block. Sweet!]
Working with so many odd shaped scraps makes for a very unique and interesting block, but WATCH OUT because once you get going it is very difficult to get this thing back to any kind of square-ish shape.
Not that it's not worth it. It SO is. But if you're like me, you may get a little carried away with glee over all the odd shaped scraps you are using that when it comes time to get it to a more normal shape . . . well, there's no easy way to say this. You may curse yourself. Or curse at yourself . . . if that's more how you roll.
All this to say, it was a relief to use up those little bits and pieces. It was lovely to see them all come together and each become their own showpiece . . . offset by some lovely and pure Kona white.
Now go. Try it yourself. I promise, you'll enjoy the freedom of the random pieces.
Just try not to use this as an excuse to START saving teeny scraps if you don't already. Let's not get crazy, ok?

That is flippin' gorgeous.
I really like it. Think I may try that one out.
Thank you thank you thank you! I really loved letting the fabric lead the way. Lots of fun, this one. :)
Beautiful! 'Ticker Tape' quilt is another way to use up some of those tiny scraps without going quite as crazy. :-) You could keep the odd shapes, but still fit them into a square background a little easier. I've done crazy quilting like yours before, and it is a challenge to end up with something even flat, let alone square... :-)
Great idea, Katherine! I've seen those around before and keep thinking "I should try that!" Maybe that's why I have so many scraps? It would help if I wrote down my ideas sometimes . . . LOL.
To keep 'er flat I ironed all the seams open. A bit tedious, but it worked out pretty ok.
Love it!!!
